A Change of Plans...

Guess what? You never will so I'll tell ya...hubby, kids and I are going caribou hunting for the rest of the week - hooray! Dwayne was going to go on his own but he would be gone for about 4 days and he didn't want to leave me alone. I didn't mind him going but I don't sleep as well when he's not home so he talked me into going along. :) It should be fun. It's been years since I've slept outside in a tent in winter. Right now we're trying to track down an appropriate sized wall tent to borrow. (For those of you who are wondering a wall tent is a canvas tent that has been constructed with a hole in the roof so you can stick a small woodstove inside.) I suddenly have an awful lot to do this afternoon - grocery shopping, laundry, packing, and getting hunting tags.
I guess my cleaning and reorganizing will have to wait until after the hunting trip. Along with that nice hot bath...
See you when we get back!

Note: We've decided not to bother with the wall tent. We figure it'll be a lot simpler just to sleep in the back of our Astro van. We'll only put in one row of back seats and then take that out when we get to there so we've got room to sleep.

This week's "Commitment to Loveliness"

1) Sort clothes and get rid of anything that doesn't fit or isn't flattering.
2) Moisturize my legs daily.
3) Have at least one hot soak in the tub.
4) Wear a skirt at least one day this week.
5) Have a regular "tea time" each day to sit and sip tea and write letters or read.

I've decided to be brave and join Randi at i have to say for "Let's Get Real Monday". Here's the idea: "Pick your own must-be-cleaned spot (or spots) in your house and post them on your blog (posts with or without pictures are perfect!). Then leave your link in my Monday post so that myself and the other gals can come visit you!"

Right now the most troublesome parts of my house have to do with laundry and lots of it! I am in that in between stage after giving birth where your maternity clothes don't really fit but your regular clothes don't really fit either so you have everything out hoping that each day something else will fit! The pictures I am about to post are not for the weak hearted, they scare me so I'm just warning you ahead of time...thankfully all the laundry you see here is clean! :P

Here is the laundry area/coat storage in our apartment. It's too cluttered for my liking but I just haven't worked out a good storage system yet.

This is the area to right in the picture above. It is our only real extra storage space so out of season clothes, recycling, shoes and more shoes, boots, sporting goods, luggage, stuff to be donated, fans/airconditioner not in use, baby bath tub, tools, they all wind up here. Scary. I know.

World Water Day - March 22nd
This year we've decided to use the tithe from our income tax return to support several different ministries/organizations, among them World Vision. Unbeknownst to us, Thursday was World Water Day (for more info click here). We found this out while watching TV later on the evening after we had purchased clean water gifts from World Vision's gift catalogue.
The amount of water we use per day in North America is amazing compared to what much of the developing world has access to. We can drink water from any source in our house without having to worry about contamination or disease. We can just turn on a tap. We don't have to walk for kilometres to access water or wonder if we will have enough water for today. We are very blessed.

Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to work we go...
Are two years olds supposed to be this strong? He was packing around a 1 litre bottle of water in one hand and a cordless drill with battery pack attached in the other.

This week has been a blur...
The first half of this week I accomplished pretty much nothing. The middle part I ran around like a chicken with my head cut off mending and hemming jeans for Dwayne and doing a big clean up. Saturday and Sunday have consisted of doing pretty much nothing again. I ran the dishwasher 3(!) times on Saturday as we had company over for my mom's 50th on Friday night. We had a really nice time. :) Today we took a drive out to Bell Rock to look at the progress Dwayne has made this week on our log house. It's looking GREAT! The snow fell off the roof with the warmer weather this week. It's nice to see the green tin roof again! The stairs are in now so we took some measurements so I can play around with my floorplan program to figure out how to configure the bathroom and kitchen and where to put the walls and door around the bathroom. The rest of the house is open concept.
Tonight once Hendrik is in bed Dwayne and I are going to watch "Hitch" and work on our respective projects - he bullet reloading and me sewing. Should be fun!

You Are An Iris
You are a unique woman who needs a lot of novelty in her life.An inspiration seeker, you often have to change scenery to recharge. You don't deal well with structure or rules. You need to do it your own way.Your ideal relationships are free and flowing. No one can tie you down.

Fix! Fix!
Hendrik loves to fix things right now. This generally means playing with tools or trying to help his daddy make bullets. But seeing as we don't need bullets made every day we are trying to come up with fix-it type things for him to do. He helped Dwayne look for some tools in a big Rubbermaid bin in the porch early which was so exciting for him. He found a whistle I had for hiking and now has it in his crib for his naptime. There is getting to be longer and longer pauses between whistle blasts so I think sleep is near...

Shovelling rocks!
I had fun this afternoon. Dwayne watched the kids and I went out and shovelled the driveway. Yes, you heard me correctly. I love to shovel snow! The plow keeps going by and not lifting the blade when it passes our driveway so the van was blocked in by about 6 feet of snow that was 2-3 feet deep. It took me about an hour but I got it done along with a little bit of snow from the other side of the driveway where we park the car. Now Dwayne can get out of the driveway to go to Bell Rock to start installing the stairs in our log house - yipee!

Hooray for Hendrik!
Our little guy is growing up! He is trying to do more and more "big boy" things now. Yesterday he ate a whole bowl of oatmeal by himself using a spoon and today he drank orange juice from a large glass glass. No spills! :)

Getting back into a routine
Well, it's been 3 months now since we had Riley and since Dwayne has been off on paternity leave. It's been GREAT! :) Now that the weather is warming up Dwayne has spent the last few afternoons out at Bell Rock working on our house. The windows are all in now and so today I think Dwayne was going to be working in on sealing up the spaces between the roof and tops of the walls - gables? Is that right? Anyway, it's really coming along. Very exciting. If you want to see a short video clip of the house from last week check out Micah's website.

Hendrik, Riley and I are getting used to doing our own thing for most of the day now too. Today Hendrik and Riley decided they would give their mommy a break and nap at the same time. I love these kids!

How to traumatize your child for life...
Our little guy really used to like brushing his teeth. He LOVED the toothpaste and the first chance he got he would slurp it off the brush and swallow it. For some reason unbeknownst to us he started fighting us brushing his teeth a couple of months ago. We didn't force the issue too much. He doesn't eat tons of sugary things so we figured if he misses a day here and there its not the end of the world. We even bought him a couple of fun battery powered toothbrushes to use. He used them occasionally but we were still mystified by his switch from not minding brushing his teeth to abhorring the process. Tonight we found out why. After the usual protestations we got the toothbrush in his mouth a few times and then I gave it to him to try himself. He wanted to brush his little sister's teeth. I didn't allow this as she is only 3 months old and has no teeth! However, I said he could try brushing my teeth - ugh. It was terrible. The baby toothpaste must have gone rancid. The toothpaste which he once loved now was the most horrible tasting stuff you have ever tried. Ick. I checked both tubes we had of the stuff. Both bad, both gross. The poor kid! No wonder he didn't like getting his teeth brushed anymore. We felt so bad. We never even thought to check the toothpaste. I think tomorrow the little guy and I will make a special trip to the drugstore to get him the flashiest little kids' toothpaste we can find, partly as compensation and partly to try to detraumatize the dental hygeine experience. Poor baby!

Homemaking Meme
I found this over at Emma's blog and thought it looked like fun.

Aprons – Yes or No? If Yes, what does your favorite look like?
Yes! I have one that is oilcloth with an old add for Sunlight dish soap.

Baking – Favorite thing to bake
Chocolate chip cookies that are chewy or cocoa cookies. Yum!

Clothesline – Yes or No?
Yes! Although we haven't had it up in a while due to vandalism last summer - someone tore it down, clean laundry and all. :(

Donuts – Have you ever made them?
No, but this reminds me that my mom has a delicious recipe for making baked donuts. I will have to ask her for it and give them a try.

Every day – One homemaking thing you do every day
I always go around the house each evening and tidy up. I make sure all the toys are put away and the books are stacked nicely on the coffee tables and that the dishes are all in the kitchen and that entrance hall is clean.

Freezer – Do you have a separate deep freeze?
No, but it's on our wishlist. My husband is a hunter and if he gets a moose there is no way it can fit in our refridgerator freezer. This year's moose is in my mom and dad's freezer!

Garbage Disposal – Yes or No?

Handbook – What is your favorite homemaking resource?
\I like to the Martha Stewart website. I am hoping to get her homekeeping book as well someday.

Ironing – Love it or hate it? Or hate it but love the results?
Neither really. I do like the look of a freshly pressed cotton dress shirt or linen top but rarely iron. I usually just cheat and hang up the shirt as soon as it comes from the dryer before it has a chance to wrinkle.

Junk drawer – Yes or No? Where is it?
Multiple ones! There is one in the kitchen, one in our bedroom, one in the living room and one in the spare room/office.

Kitchen – Color and decorating scheme
We live in an old rental so we haven't done much with it. The cupboards were fake dark wood but we painted them white. The floor is a funky green, harvest gold and cream lino from the 60s/70s and our sink is harvest gold too. Yeah, I can't wait for the kitchen in our log home - I get to pick out everything from scratch!

Love – What is your favorite part of homemaking?
I love doing laundry - it's such a practical thing but it involves taking care of everyone in our family and every room in our home.

Mop – Yes or No?
Oh yes. We have a new synthetic style mop that built on the design of those old cotton, stringy mops. It works well and dries out very quickly once you've finished mopping.

Nylons – Wash by hand or in the washing machine?
Definitely by hand! Then they hang over the shower curtain rod to dry.

Oven – Do you use the window or open the oven to check?
I open the door.

Pizza – What do you put on yours?
I like ham and pineapple or sometimes chicken, and my husband prefers pepperoni and green pepper so we do both!

Quiet – What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment? I check my favourite blogs or read or call my sisters and almost always have a snack!

Recipe card box – Yes or No? What does it look like?
\Yes, my grandfather made me one of stained glass. It is brown glass with a slice of pie on the lid.

Style of house – What style is your house?
We live in an apartment over what used to be a Nazarene church that was probably built in the 60s. However, we are currently building an eight sided log home and hope to be moved in by the fall.

Tablecloths and napkins – Yes or No?
Not often, although I should! I really love cloth napkins. We have a beautiful pine table that my husband built and I like to let it's character shine in our dining room so I rarely cover it up.

Under the kitchen sink – Organized or toxic wasteland?
An organized toxic wasteland!

Vacuum – How many times per week?
Probably at least three times a week. It make the house look so much fresher.

Wash – How many loads of laundry do you do per week?
Probably about 8 loads of clothes(my husband is a mechanic!) and linens per week plus 4 or 5 loads of diapers.

X’s – Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off?
Yes! I write oodles of lists.

Yard – Yes or No? Who does what?
Yes. I do the weeding and flower planting and sweep the steps and walkways. My husband plants most of the veggies and does the lawn mowing on the riding mower. The riding mower is a fun thing for me every once in a while too though!

Zzz’s – What is your last homemaking task for the day before going to bed?
I do a quick sweep of the house putting things away..

This week's "Commitment to Loveliness"

Well, I only did one thing on my list for the weekend - have a nice soothing bath. It was a fairly hectic weekend though with family arriving from out of town for my sister's wedding and planning and throwing a bridal shower as well.
I was planning on sewing a dress for little Riley but Dwayne picked a gorgeous dress out for her when he was in Edmonton picking up the my grandparents and my other sister and her husband.
My sister's wedding is this coming Saturday so I am going to keep it really simple this time around!

1) Get my legs in tip top shape for wearing a bridesmaid's dress on Saturday. Lots of moisturizing and exfoliating and leg lifts!

2) Get my hair cut and coloured professionally and have my eyebrows groomed.

3) Clear my dining room table of paperwork and odds and ends and set it prettily.

4) Wash the walls in our entranceway and make the space more welcoming.

5) Repot plants that are now too large for their pots and redisperse through the apartment.

Finished project - finally!
I have an undetermined number of UFOs (UnFinished Objects) on the go at any given time and last night I FINALLY finished one of them. I've had this project in mind since November and had started on it in December but then put it on hold due to having a brand new baby at home. I dug out what I had started yesterday but wasn't happy with how it looked so I set that aside and started fresh. This quilted change pad and flannel wipes are the results. I made these for a friend who had a boy in November.

Commitment to Loveliness

Here are my goals for this weekend:
1) Have a nice, soothing soak in the tub.
2) Do both my hair and make-up on Sunday.
3) Sit down each day with a cup of tea and write a "real" letter to friends.
4) Work on a lovely little dress for our lovely little daughter.
5) Clear the dining room table of clutter and arrange it nicely.
