My first new habit to start on this week is doing the dishes immediately after each meal, no matter how few or how many dishes need to be done. I find it too easy to lump breakfast dishes in with lunch dishes, which in turn, get lumped in with the supper dishes, and then there's the midnight snack dishes. It's way too overwhelming. You don't want to see my kitchen counter right now - actually you probably can't see my kitchen counter right now...

The second habit I'd like to work on this week is starting and using a "tickler" file. It's basically having a calendar in file folder format. You have a box or drawer with 12 hanging file folders in it, labelled for each month. Then you have regular file folders numbered 1-31 for the days of each month. As you go through your paperwork and bills you simply slip the papers into the appropriate date file according to when you need to have the bill paid or paper dealt with etc. Right now I have a pile of paper beside my computer that I rummage through every other day or so. Oh so effective! :p

Previous habits in the making:
Keeping the dining room table clear and presented nicely ~ one word - abysmal!
Getting up with my husband each morning ~ getting better all the time

A Tale of Two Goldfish

In January of 2004 I bought some $0.56 feeder goldfish from Wal-Mart. I thought I was getting some nice, colourful, cheap, short term pets. Boy, was I ever wrong!(Not about the nice, colourful part though!) These two started out very tiny and now they are about 8 inches long from nose to tail and are still growing. I read that this particular kind of fish can grow to be 18 inches long if placed in a large enough tank and can live to be 80 years old. 80. Good grief! I never thought I would potentially need to will my goldfish to someone.

WFMW - Cleaning the Microwave

Around our house not everything that goes into the microwave gets covered up. As a result I sometimes open the microwave and marvel at how much food is splattered on the inside.

Instead of scrubbing until my elbow hurts, I partially fill a glass Pyrex measuring cup (I think mine holds about 2L) with water and add about 1/2 cup of vinegar. I put it in the microwave uncovered and cook on high for about 5 minutes. I let it sit in there for another 5-10 minutes and then simply wipe the inside of the microwave clean. The steam helps to loosen the food particles and the vinegar acts as a cleaner and deodorizer. It works for me!

Scrubbing Bubbles update...
As I mentioned earlier I decided to give Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner a whirl. So far, so good! I still scrub the bathtub a few times a week (because I'm obsessive about that for the kids) BUT the shower walls are lovely and scum free! Hooray!

Let's Get Real Monday - "The Outfit"

This week's theme over at Randi's is "The Outfit". Here are two of my former faves!

Ah yes, this is one of those dresses where everyone over a certain age loves it and everyone under a certain age thinks your dress is hideous but won't say so or they will...:)

This jacket. What can I say? It always brought a smile/grimace to the face of anyone I approached. They either:
A) Loved it
B) Were blinded by it
C) Or were really glad to have someone to make fun of!
I had friends comment that they couldn't lose me in a large crowd but by wearing that jacket they might just hide from me! LOL!

CONFESSION: I still own both pieces of clothing. I actually tried them on tonight to get pictures. I think it's time to say goodbye!

One thing leads to another...
I was going to post some pictures today but I got cleaning and organizing and then I figured that I might as well paint while I was at it. The interior door into our apartment was looking very tired and grubby so I decided to cheer it up a little bit with some paint. I'm not sure of the colour just yet but I still have another coat to go.

This is what I wish I could be doing today (well, I would definitely be watching something other than Clifford or reading) but I have too much to get done. I find it hard to relax when things are in disarray. Maybe next Saturday I can laze around. :) Although I think hubs and I will catch up on LOST and Jericho tonight before bed.

Well, my goal from last week was accomplished in part. I have been getting up earlier consistantly but not at the same time as my husband. I'll keep working on it this week.
My new habit to work on this week is to keep my dining room table clear of clutter at all times. Too often it becomes a dumping ground for things that need to be but away or papers that I don't know what to do with or don't want to deal with.

Cleaning and Organizing

I have no idea where this week has gone. I have been busy trying to get our house spring cleaned and organized but so far I think I have only succeeded in trashing the parts of the house that were clean and orderly to begin with! Furniture has been moved, stuff has been shuffled, our aquarium has had another water problem, the kids have had colds and rashes, my sister and I think we might have an internet stalker...interesting week.
I am hoping to have some "after" pictures posted later on tonight once I get things into some semblence of order but right now the "before" is really scary. If I focus on one little area at a time its not too bad but if I look at the big picture ahhhhhhhhhh! (Picture Kevin in Home Alone!!)

We have been enjoying my DH being on paternal leave for the past four months. However, this Monday he has to return to work. This means I'm on my own again during the days and so I will need to have more of a routine. My habit to work on this time is getting up early and at the same time each morning. I want to start "working" the same time as my husband does.

My first Japanese craft books!

I've seen so many neat projects done from Japanese craft books so I finally decided to get some of my own. Not cheap but very nice! There are a lot of nice projects so right now I'm trying to decide what to make first - blouse(s), skirt, bags, "house shoes"... :)

I have to get cracking around our apartment first though! No new projects for me until I get my spring cleaning finished and finish at least one of my unfinished projects(did I mention I am the QUEEN of unfinished projects...).

Works-For-Me Wednesday ~ Bathing babies

Here is this week's WFMW hosted by Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer.

What works for me is wearing cotton gloves (the kind you would use after a rich moisturizer at night or for a manicure) while bathing young babies. It is much easier to hold onto them and the gloves double as wash cloths. I also like to place a handtowel on the bottom of the baby bathtub to help prevent sliding around and also to make it a little cushier for tiny tushies. :)

Our house in progress...
Here are some recent photos of our log house.

Here's the front of the house. The logs will eventually be sanded and stained the same colour as the front door. You can also see our "practice cabin" in the background.

This photo is looking up at the roof from the ground floor. The loft covers about 2/3 of the area above the main floor. Dwayne has just started insulating, hence the pink!

This is on the ground floor. The framing is for the only walls in the house - the bathroom walls.

Scrubbing Bubbles...
I'm not usually one to buy convenience cleaning products - I refuse to own a Swiffer, but I caved on this one. My husband pointed this out to me in Reader's Digest the other day and thought I might find it useful. He had even researched it a little and found some on eBay. I thought it was interesting so on a whim at the grocery store today I checked out the cleaning aisle and lo and behold there it was! I didn't think it would have arrived in our neck of the woods just yet. We're usually a little behind the times living where we do. Anyway, I've installed it in our shower and hopefully it works! I'll keep you posted. Does anyone have one already? How do you like them?

Hendrik and Riley's first stroller ride together
We were at Bell Rock on Saturday afternoon for a sanding party of sorts. The guys were inside sanding the beams and the floor of the loft and the girls were hanging out in the little cabin. I brought the Croozer out with us so we could go for a walk. Here are the pics!

Nothing like a change of scenery
Wednesday evening I got bit by the furniture rearranging bug. This happens to me every so often and I drop everything and rearrange, clean, and essentially give myself a physical and mental workout all at once. I find it helps to clear the cobwebs in my head and help me tackle other things I've been avoiding. Thankfully I have a husband that, although he doesn't understand why I would want to switch the furniture around so often, doesn't mind these shuffles as long as his "man chair" remains in the living room within eyeshot of the TV. :)

Life at a standstill
I feel like I am watching myself in slow motion. There are so many things that need to be done and that I want to do but I just seem to muster the energy to do more than the very basic cooking and cleaning. I am approaching 10 weeks with a sinus infection. ugh. I have been trying to avoid antibiotics for as long as I can. I've already had one round and they seemed to help initially but the infection came back. If I go back on them now the doctor says I will need to stay on them for 6 weeks as they can't give me a really strong antibiotic because I am breastfeeding Riley. I am trying to hold out for another week using an anti-inflamatory nasal spray. So far it's not working. My face feels numb, hot, tingly, sore and plain strange all at once. At least I don't have a fever or a runny nose. I'm sick of being sick and not having the energy to do all the things I want to do. Blah!

We returned yesterday afternoon from our hunting trip. We didn't get any caribou but we still had a great time! I will post some more later once we get the laundry from the trip under control. :)
