Bloggy Hiatus
I will likely be taking a blog hiatus for a while after announcing the contest winner for the Dog Days of Summer Bloggy Giveaway. My grandfather is quite ill and our family is gathering to be with him. I'm not sure how long I'll be gone for or when I'll be going but it's not likely that I will have much time to post in the near future.

Christmas in July - Dinner Menu

In our house we typically have the same menu from year to year with the odd variation here or there. For example, one year we had a goose instead of a turkey.

Here is an idea of what Christmas dinner at our house is like:
Mashed potatoes
Brussel sprouts
Yorkshire pudding
Assorted pickles, beets, cranberry sauce, etc
Bacon wrapped sausage

Pumpkin pie
Marshmallow squares

Please share your menus with us! Recipes are welcome too if you feel so inclined. :)

Christmas in July - Favourite Christmas Music

In our family music has always played very largely into our Christmas celebrations. Each year we would beg our mom to let us listen to Christmas music starting in October or so. Usually we would end up waiting until December 1st, or the odd time the end of November if Mom was feeling particularly festive.

Here are some of my favourites:
What Child Is This?
Good Christian Men Rejoice
O Come All Ye Faithful
Let It Snow
Winter Wonderland
White Christmas
Over the River and Through the Woods
The Coventry Carol
Gabriel's Message

A few Christmases ago my family got me the "Merry Christmas Songbook" published by Reader's Digest. A whole huge book of piano/guitar/vocal music devoted just to Christmas songs. So much fun!

Last winter my favourite Christmas album was "Christmas Songs" by Diana Krall. Every time I would play this CD my then almost 2 year old would come up to me and ask if we could dance. It's great! :)

What are some of your favourites? Please leave a comment and/or a link to your Christmas in July post if you are playing along on your blog.

I am famous for putting things in a "safe place" and then not being able to find them. Today my husband was going to the dentist and I need to find our dental insurance cards. I had seen them recently but could not find them anywhere. I decided to tackle a paper pile in the area where I thought they were and what do you know? There they were. However, I had taken them off their little paper backing so instead of looking for loose cards I was looking for a full size sheet of paper with cards on it. Note to self: don't trust your pregnant brain too much!

Also, I found a gift card that has been elusive the past few months. Again, I had put it in a "safe spot". Hooray!

I was so happy last night with my discoveries. I better spend some time this afternoon getting my paperwork in order.

Frugal Friday - Exploring Yearly Store Memberships

It seems like such a hassle to fill out a membership form at a store but sometimes the extra 5 minutes is more than worth it. Last summer I was shopping for curtain supplies for our church nursery. I needed both fabric as well as a curtain rod and the necessary hardware. Looking around Fabricland I noticed that for members curtain rods and hardware were 50% off. If I purchased the membership for the year I would save more than the amount of the membership cost on my first purchase. In addition to this I saved on the cost of the chosen fabric as well. Sometimes membership pays!

Raspberry goodness!
Today has been a tough day for Riley. Her teeth have been bothering her a lot and nothing seemed to be helping. Enter frozen raspberries. They are a big hit with Hendrik because he is our resident berry boy but this was a first for Riley. Last week I bought this nifty little gadget at our local drug store. It allows you to feed a small baby chunks of big people food without the risk of choking. This proved to be a hit with Riley. The new taste distracted her and the frozen berries helped to relieve her sore gums.

WFMW - Important Documents
After one too many hunting expeditions for assorted important papers - passports, birth certificates, marriage certificate, health & dental insurance info, car insurance, etc., I decided to put all the current documents in one place, in one file. I bought a plastic file holder and put all the papers inside and I keep it on top of my fridge. I never use the cupboards up there anyway so it's not in my way and it's easy to access those infrequently used yet need-to-be-found-quickly type of documents.

Here is what my folder looks like:

So tired lately!
I have not been good about posting regularly lately. I am just so draggy right now from being newly pregnant. You should see my apartment. Actually, it would probably frighten most of you. I've been vacuuming every other day or so but that and the laundry is about all that gets done on a regular basis. I should mention that the laundry gets washed and dried but folded, well, not so much! Hopefully, I will get a bit of energy back soon.

Feelin' the love
Our little guy has recently started using the word love. Now, it would be really sweet for his momma if he would say he loved me a little here and there but, for now, that is just not in the cards. :)

Recent (& frequent) quotes from the past few days:
Love tools.
Love dewdivers. (screwdrivers)
Love bulbs.
Love lightbulbs.

I should clarify that he did say "Love Mommy," and "Love Riley," and "Love Daddy," once each but I'm afraid that we just don't begin to compare to his hardware collection.

Goodbye Old Friend
About a week and a half ago our old dog Ben passed away. He was 16 human years old, which I suppose, is about 112 dog years old. He was a fun, very quirky dog and the last of our childhood pets. It was nice that all of us kids were in town when it happened so we were all able to say goodbye and give him the usual sort of send off we used to do for all of our pets as kids. Sadly, my mom was away as her dad was quite ill at the time. Ben was really her dog most of all. Mom adopted him from the animal shelter and he, in turn, adopted her.

This funeral didn't involve a sermon or hymns this time, although it was attended by a former minister (my dad) and an almost minister (my sister Lindsey). ;) Our 2 year old helped with all of the "arrangements" and kept saying, "Funny dog. Very old. Very sick. Feel sad. One fower (flower), one fower. Nice one. One fower. Cookie for Benny. Biskeet(biscuit). Bye bye Ben. Bye bye Benny."

Here is the video my brother-in-law Micah created, complete with a Frank Sinatra soundtrack, for any of you who might be curious. Nothing gruesome, don't worry! I am in the brown tank top, my sister Lindsey is in the striped shirt, and my sister Christen is in the brown t-shirt.

P.S. When we were kids, my sister Lindsey insisted on having funerals not only for each family pet but also for each victim of our cats and each bird that crashed into the windows. Basically anything that died on our property. These were not small affairs. There were usually hymns and prayers and short sermons and flowers and grave markers. If anyone digs up yard in one hundred years they will wonder why there is a disproportionate number of critters there - mostly things the cat brought in.

Riley tries rice cereal!
Riley has been fascinated by our eating lately and if she can will try to swipe some of whatever you've got heading toward your mouth. We decided to let her try some "real" food today for the first time. Here she is having her first taste of rice cereal. She doesn't look too sure but she did eagerly eat about 5 little spooonfuls. :)

Please pardon the ugly bruise on my arm. I don't know if I bumped it working outside or during a tussle with my brother David. Either way, it's not very pretty right now!

Schedule revisted
I pulled this from a blog post long ago when my toddler was only a few months old. I think I need a schedule again so I am going to study this one and tweak it a bit and see what I can come up with. Things will have to change a bit as we now have 2 little ones.
I am also contemplating putting the TV away for most of the summer or at least taking it out of the living room. I know that isn't on the schedule but it does tend to eat up more of our time than we realize.

Daily Schedule - Monday through Saturday

7:30 a.m. - Up, breakfast, load of laundry into washing machine

8:00 a.m. - Dishes, 1st load of laundry into dryer, 2nd into washing machine

8:30 a.m. - Devotions & Prayer

9:00 a.m. - Fold & put away 1st load of laundry, put 2nd load into dryer

9:30 a.m. - Tidy bedrooms, check email

10:00 a.m. - Fold & put away 2nd load of laundry, supper preparations

10:30 a.m. - MONDAY - Clean aquarium, wipe down chalkboard
- TUESDAY - Bathroom, water plants indoors
- WEDNESDAY - Bedrooms
- THURSDAY - Clean bunny cages, vacuum
- FRIDAY - Dust, sweep & wash floors
- SATURDAY - Tidy entrance, clean bathroom

11:30 a.m. - Shower, prepare lunch

12:00 p.m. - Lunchtime

12:30 p.m. - Dishes, tidying up

1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Unscheduled

4:30 p.m. - DH home from work

5:00 p.m. - Supper

5:30 p.m. - Dishes

6:00 p.m. - 10 p.m. - Unscheduled

10:00 p.m. - Water plants outside, clean kitchen sinks

10:30 p.m. - Get baby ready for bed, tidy living room

11:00 p.m. - Nurse baby, bedtime

As you can see this schedule allows a lot of unscheduled time which allows for fun times and extra chore times as needed

One last swap project
Here is my last swap project for a long while! Swapping has been fun and it has forced me to be crafty on a more regular basis. My sewing machine and I are now quite well aquainted again and the thought of sewing something larger is not so scary anymore. However, I just don't have the time or energy to keep it up. I need to focus on keeping my house in order and doing some sewing for my family.

I took my inspiration for this little bag from one of my Japanese craft magazines.

Log house update
Here is our current work in progress. Dwayne has been working like mad in his free evenings and weekends. Yesterday he was working on our screen porch. I took this picture around 7 p.m. and by 10 p.m. or so when he got home it had a green tin roof on it as well. We will eventually sand the log posts and the exterior of the house so that they are a nice blonde colour.

Happy Canada Day!
We just got back from watching the parade and the flag raising ceremony at the park. We're home grabbing a bite to eat and a nap and then we'll head back down later this afternoon for the community fish fry. The fish fry is the stuff of legends and it is every bit as good as people make it out to be. There is a secret recipe of course. They serve white fish, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, and coleslaw and literally the entire town shows up. There is great sadness if you can't be in town for Canada Day because it is just that good.

Here is a Canadian stereotype reinforcing picture of Dwayne and Hendrik from this morning. It is a really bright day today so everyone has funny squinted expressions but we had to take advantage of the photo op! :)
(The RCMP don't dress like this everyday by the way...)

If you look carefully you can see most of the rest of the family in the background. My brother-in-law Micah is in the blue shirt holding the camera, my sister Lindsey is in the stripes, my sister Christen is in pink, you can see the top of my head, and beside me is my brother-in-law Andrew's head! My dad is taking the photo and my mom is in the air somewhere on her way home from Ontario and little Riley is in the stroller somewhere behind the guys.
