A little stunned...
We were away for the weekend and as we were preparing to return home on Monday we found out that an RCMP officer had been shot and killed in a neighbouring town while responding to a call early Saturday morning.
Constable Christopher Worden was married and had an 8 month old daughter. I feel terribly for the family and will be keeping them in my thoughts and prayers. I don't know this particular officer but as the Northwest Territories is a small place (less than 42,000 people in TOTAL) an incident like this affects almost everyone. When the towns are typically under 3000 people you get to know the officers in your town by sight at the very least. With communities being so small and remote you can understand how much smaller and tight-knit a community the RCMP members and their families must be. I can't imagine what it is like for the detachment in Hay River right now. It must be so difficult to lose a friend and coworker in that way.
The young suspect is still at large and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. People are sad and frightened and I imagine it will take some time before the community is able to heal.
