Works For Me Wednesday - The Backwards Edition
This week Shannon is hosting a backwards edition of WFMW. Instead of providing a tip, you ask for some from your fellow bloggers. It's a chance to get your most puzzling problems solved.

Here is my connundrum.

We are going to be moving into a much smaller house in the very near future. Our rental unit had a lot of extra space and a garage and shed. The house we have built does not have much space, maybe 700sq ft in total. We have a small cabin that we plan on sealing up well for storage.

Do any of you have suggestions for storing belongings for long periods of time? We likely will have to store a good portion of our things for a couple of years until we finish building a larger house. Are there special packing/storage tips for clothing that wouldn't apply to say kitchen supplies or papers/books?

Jenny, honestly, my best solution is to ask yourself if you really need all that stuff in the first place.

Do your best to get rid of as much as you can :)

I agree with Marcia. Be brutal about what is worth keeping and get rid of as much as you can.

You clearly value your time with your family, the beauty of nature, and being self-reliant. Why keep most of the "stuff" that our culture tells us we need?

We downsized from two houses to a 300 square foot RV and have been so much happier not to be owned by our belongings. It is a peaceful way to be.

Thanks Marcia and Louise! I am doing my best to cut down on the amount of stuff that we have and trying to focus more on quality and function.
I come from a family that tends to keep everything so this is a something I really have to push myself to do. I need to do it though as I do feel trapped by the stuff and clutter sometimes.

Right now we are in a similar situation with most of our belongings being stored. I have as much as possible in containers vs boxes. We originally packed in boxes & I have been going through them getting rid of things & re-packing into containers as I have the money to do. My biggest piece of advice is do not get a storage unit. Or if you do, figure out the cost over the next x years & figure out if you could just replace the stuff. We luckily are storing in a basement & are only keeping the stuff that we can store. We sold some things like entertainment center, table, 1 couch, etc that wasn't worth storing. Then when our place is bigger we can look forward to redecorating! Good luck!
